Google AI Mode and AI search: what changes for service businesses in Pakistan
The short version
- Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer many questions before anyone clicks, so a service business can be seen and chosen without a website visit ever showing up in analytics.
- What still earns visibility is the old work done properly: one clear page per service, direct answers, identical business details across Google Business Profile and directories, real reviews, local specifics and accurate structured data.
- Judge search by calls, WhatsApp chats, direction requests and branded searches, not clicks alone. Clicks can fall while enquiries hold steady.
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, along with ChatGPT and Perplexity, now answer many questions directly, so fewer people click through to a website before deciding who to call. For a service business in Pakistan, whether a Lahore dental clinic, a Karachi logistics firm or an Islamabad consultancy, that changes the job your website does. It still needs to rank, but it also needs to be the clearest and most consistent source of facts about what you do, where and for whom, because that appears to be what these systems lean on when they summarise and recommend.
The practical response is not a new trick. It is clear service pages, direct answers, consistent business details everywhere you are listed, genuine reviews, specific local detail and correct structured data. Then measure success by calls and WhatsApp chats, not by clicks alone.
What has actually changed
AI Overviews put a written summary above the usual results for many searches. AI Mode goes further: a conversational search where people ask follow-up questions and get an answer with links tucked alongside. ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web and cite the pages they drew on. These features are rolling out by country and language at different speeds, so search for your own services on your own phone and see what your customers actually get.
The effect is uneven. Informational questions, such as "how long does a root canal take" or "what does a tax consultant charge for a return", can be answered without a click. Questions that end in hiring someone, such as "dentist in Gulberg open on Sunday", still end in a call or a visit. But the shortlist may now be formed by a summary rather than by ten blue links.
One honest caveat. Nobody outside these companies knows exactly how sources are chosen, and anyone selling a guaranteed method for "ranking in ChatGPT" is guessing. Google's own public guidance says there is no special markup or file you need to appear in its AI features, and that the usual search fundamentals apply. What follows is what is reasonable given that, and given what has always worked.
What still earns visibility
A clear page for each service
A system summarising "who does visa consultancy in Islamabad" needs a page that is clearly about visa consultancy in Islamabad. A Services page listing eight things in a paragraph each is a weak source for all eight. We cover this in one page, five services, and it matters more now, not less.
Direct answers near the top
Put the answer first, then the detail. If customers keep asking on WhatsApp whether you do home visits in DHA, what a first consultation costs roughly, or how long the job takes, those questions and their answers belong on the page in plain sentences. A sentence that answers a question cleanly is easy to quote. A paragraph about "delivering excellence" is not.
Consistent business information everywhere
Your name, address, phone number, hours and list of services should be identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, your Facebook page and every directory you appear in. Lahore addresses get written several different ways; pick one and use it everywhere. When sources disagree, any system, AI or not, has a reason to trust none of them. Update your hours for Ramadan in every place, not just on Instagram.
Real reviews, with detail
Reviews that mention the actual service and area say far more than "great service, 5 stars". Ask after every completed job and send the review link on WhatsApp while the customer is still pleased. Never buy reviews. It breaks Google's policies, and people spot them.
Specific local detail
Which areas you cover, where to park, which languages you work in, whether you take walk-ins, how payment works. "We serve clients across Pakistan" tells a reader and a machine nothing. "We visit homes in Johar Town, Model Town and Bahria Town; same-day appointments before 2pm" is a fact someone can use.
Structured data that matches the page
Structured data, in practice JSON-LD for your business, services and location, states in machine-readable form who you are, where you are and when you are open. It does not guarantee anything. It removes ambiguity, and it must match what the visible page says. Getting this right across a site is part of our tech and web work.
Why thin "SEO pages" lose
You have seen them: "best plumber in Lahore", "best plumber in Karachi", "best plumber in Faisalabad", the same few hundred words with the city name swapped, written for a keyword rather than a person. They were weak before. Now they have even less to offer, because a summary needs a fact to lift, and these pages contain none. Google's spam policies also specifically address mass-produced pages and doorway pages.
AI writing tools make that kind of page cheaper to produce, so there are far more of them, which leaves even less reason to show any particular one. Original detail, such as real prices, real process and real photos of your work, becomes relatively scarcer and worth more.
A simple test for every page on your site: would a customer learn anything here they could not have guessed? If not, rewrite it, merge it or delete it.
Measure beyond clicks
If more questions are answered on the results page, website clicks can fall while enquiries hold steady, or even rise. Judge search by sessions alone and you may cut the work that is quietly bringing in customers. Track what turns into business instead:
- Calls, from your Google Business Profile and from the site, ideally on a number you only use there.
- WhatsApp chats. Track taps on the WhatsApp button as an event, and use a different pre-filled message per page so you can see which page started each conversation.
- Direction requests and profile actions in Google Business Profile.
- Branded search. In Search Console, watch how many people search your business name. Growth there means people heard about you somewhere, possibly from an AI answer.
- Asking. "How did you find us?" in the first WhatsApp reply. It is anecdotal, but customers will tell you if ChatGPT suggested you.
As of writing, Google folds AI feature traffic into the normal Search Console reports rather than separating it out, so you will not get a neat "AI" line. Once a month, ask Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask, note whether you appear and what is said, and correct anything wrong at its source. Answers vary by person and by day, so look for patterns rather than single results. Our post on which numbers actually matter covers the wider reporting point, and setting up this kind of measurement is part of our marketing strategy work.
None of this is new. Businesses that were already doing search honestly, with clear pages, consistent details and real reviews, have the least to change. If your site was built to trick a ranking, AI search is a good reason to rebuild it for customers instead. If you want a hand with that, we work with service businesses as a digital marketing agency in Lahore and across Pakistan.
